Puckering up, Gordon Brown closes his eyes and leans towards German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The prime minister was no doubt aiming for a casual brush on the cheek by way of greeting.
But his apparent intensity and poorly-timed pucker made the embrace appear clumsy and awkward. It probably didn't help that the kiss appeared to have landed on the German leader's nose.
The pair were at a meeting of European leaders in Berlin ahead of an April international summit in London.
The embrace is not the first time Gordon Brown has publicly embarrassed himself cosying up to a European woman.
The prime minister made headlines after lunging at French first lady Carla Bruni last year.
Former supermodel Miss Bruni was visiting Downing Street on a state visit to Britain with husband Nicolas Sarkozy, the French resident.
